Our fondness for cats and their idolatry in popular culture far precedes the internet–since the days of Ancient Egypt, humans have lovingly shared pictures of our feline friends. Usually we prefer to admire cats that are cute, funny or majestic. However, there seems to be a period in human history when we enjoyed creating images of them doing something completely different— leaking their asses.
Maybe there was a certain sense of medieval humor that encouraged this trend. Maybe it was an admiration of how cats calmly kept themselves clean in a brutal time of violence, squalor, and disease. Or maybe it’s some secret Da Vinci code that gives hints about the location of the Holy Grail.
