Byzantine, Gothic, Baroque, Modernist… We know many distinct’ Western’ architecture styles because they are celebrated and rightly so. As well as the temples of pre-colonial cultures that flourished in Central and South America, Ottoman-style mosques and East Asian pagodas are also immediately recognizable.
Nevertheless, apart from the Great Pyramids of Giza, the glories of African architecture are often ignored shamefully. Sadly, this is a symptom of an general wider issue, where the African continent’s wealthy diversity and culture is mainly glossed over in global media. Most of the continent’s reports focus only on problems that strengthen adverse stereotypes – poverty, illness, and war.
